Tony Roman Memorial Hockey Tournament

This year we are celebrating our 39th anniversary of this annual winter event. Teams from the House Leagues of Markham, Thornhill and Unionville have added to their regular league play by competing in the Mayor’s Cup, initiated by the late Anthony Roman. In honour of Tony Roman’s enthusiasm for this event, the tournament has been named the Tony Roman Memorial Hockey Tournament.
 

The purpose of the Tony Roman Memorial Hockey Tournament is to provide house league players with an opportunity to compete in a tournament. Through this type of competition, the participants have an opportunity to experience and develop a sense of the four communities within the Town of Markham.
 

The competition commences on the first Saturday with each team engaged in their first round game. Round robin play continues through the second Saturday.  The Consolation and Championship finals will be played on the final Sunday.
 

Each team is guaranteed three games in a round robin format. Within their respective age groups, teams compete for the Championship or the Consolation Championship.
 

This year’s event has a total of 143 teams participating in the competition with teams from Markham Minor Hockey Association, Thornhill Community Hockey League and the Unionville Minor Hockey Association. The schedule of 258 hockey games, with over 2000 young hockey players participating, is known as the World’s Largest House League Hockey Competition

There is no charge to any of the participants or to the public attending any of the games. The games of the competition take place in all eight of the Town of Markham’s fine arena facilities. Game times and locations are contained in this program, as is a map of arena locations.

All players participating in the Tony Roman Tournament will receive special mementos of this 35th anniversary event and individual medallions shall be awarded to the participants of the teams in the Consolation and Championship finals in all divisions.
 

All coaches, managers, players and spectators are encouraged to comment on the Tony Roman Memorial Hockey Tournament activities. Recommendations can be forwarded to the committee for next year. Please write out any comments you have and pass them on to your association representative.
